Company Overview

A modern grocery technology company is developing a platform designed to help retailers reduce out-of-stocks, minimize shrink, and improve operational efficiency. Its technology connects complex retailer data and systems with modern grocery operations, enabling businesses to make better use of their data and streamline workflows.

The organization is seeking a Forward Deployed Data Engineer to bridge the gap between customer systems and its modern grocery platform. This role will work closely with onboarding managers and customer IT teams to configure the platform according to each retailer’s unique requirements.

As one of the founding members of the Forward Deployed Data Engineering team, the successful candidate will help establish the processes, playbooks, data pipelines, and integration systems required to scale the platform from its initial customers to thousands of stores.

The role is highly hands-on and focused on solving complex data integration challenges. The engineer will work with item files, invoices, and other information originating from POS systems, back-office tools, and ERP platforms in formats ranging from CSV and EDI to PDFs and scanned documents.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the platform and the interdependencies between its core systems and integration components.
• Understand customer requirements and translate business needs into system specifications and configurations.
• Configure and maintain data mappings and reconciliation processes as an integral part of the operations workflow.
• Build and maintain data pipelines and integration processes for diverse customer data sources and formats.
• Work with structured and unstructured data originating from POS systems, back-office platforms, ERP systems, invoices, and other sources.
• Collaborate closely with Operations, Product, and Engineering teams to improve workflows and systems from end to end.
• Troubleshoot complex customer data and integration issues in high-pressure environments.
• Help develop scalable playbooks, processes, and integration systems that support rapid customer onboarding.
• Manage data extraction, ingestion, reconciliation, and pipeline tuning with a high degree of autonomy.
• Contribute to improving the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of customer integrations.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or a similar customer-facing technical role, ideally within B2B SaaS or fintech.
• Strong backend and data engineering fundamentals combined with the ability to communicate directly with customer IT teams.
• Experience working with unstructured data, ETL processes, and ML/OCR pipelines.
• Strong SQL skills and experience manipulating and transforming data.
• Proficiency with regular expressions (Regex) and scripting.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex and messy customer environments.
• Strong customer empathy and the ability to remain effective in high-pressure situations.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage data extraction, ingestion, and pipeline tuning with minimal guidance.
• Willingness and ability to learn new technologies quickly.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
