The organization is seeking a Director of Forward Deployed Engineering to build and lead its Forward Deployed Engineering and Professional Services function. Forward Deployed Engineers work directly with strategic customers to design, build, and deploy production applications using modern web and AI technologies, taking projects from initial prototypes through production rollout.
This leader will define the function’s operating model, including engagement processes, delivery methodologies, commercial structures, hiring standards, and team development. The position will also remain hands-on when necessary, contributing to architecture reviews, system design, and the resolution of critical customer engagements.
What You Will Do
- Build, lead, and develop the Forward Deployed Engineering team, including hiring standards, training, career development, and compensation.
- Define the engagement model, including how projects are scoped, staffed, sequenced, measured, and selected for embedded support.
- Own delivery excellence for strategic customer engagements from discovery and technical scoping through production deployment and stabilization.
- Establish the commercial model for professional services, including packaging, pricing, capacity planning, and resource allocation.
- Remain hands-on where needed through architecture reviews, system design, and resolving critical technical challenges alongside the engineering team.
- Establish clear handoff processes between Forward Deployed Engineering, Sales Engineering, Customer Success, and external partners.
- Turn field learnings into repeatable playbooks, reference architectures, and delivery patterns that can scale across customer engagements.
- Synthesize customer insights into actionable product feedback for Engineering and Product teams.
- Report delivery outcomes and customer impact to Field Engineering and executive leadership.
About You
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, forward deployed engineering, or technical consulting roles.
- At least 5 years of experience leading customer-facing engineering or delivery teams within a high-growth environment.
- Experience building a team, function, or service line from the ground up, including hiring, methodology development, and operating model design.
- Strong knowledge of modern web technologies, including JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and cloud infrastructure.
- Ability to credibly review code and whiteboard technical architectures.
- Experience building or deploying LLM-powered applications and understanding how model behavior influences product decisions.
- Strong commercial acumen, including experience scoping, pricing, and delivering technical engagements for enterprise customers.
- Understanding of utilization, margin, and capacity planning tradeoffs.
- Demonstrated success working directly with customer engineering teams to deliver complex production systems.
Bonus If You
- Have experience building with modern web and AI development platforms, including Next.js, AI SDK, or v0.
- Have led forward deployed or embedded engineering teams at an AI-native or developer platform company.
- Have owned a professional services P&L or developed services pricing and packaging from the ground up.
- Are comfortable representing the function externally at conferences, executive customer briefings, and large-scale industry events.
