The organization is seeking an AI Engineer, Special Programs – Top Secret Clearance to work directly with end customers and lead the strategy, execution, and deployment of mission-critical AI solutions for U.S. federal agencies. The role involves close collaboration with product, research, infrastructure, and legal and governance teams to deliver high-stakes AI projects while supporting safety, transparency, and ethical standards.

AI engineers in this role will help make current and future AI models more effective for mission-critical applications. The position requires strong engineering capabilities, adaptability, and the ability to develop secure, scalable solutions in environments with stringent operational and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize integrations between frontier AI models and government systems, platforms, and data environments.
  • Identify customer pain points, define product specifications, and design AI-powered software for government and enterprise use cases.
  • Benchmark AI models and develop evaluation frameworks to measure performance and identify weaknesses.
  • Enhance model performance through system prompt tuning and fine-tuning while maintaining secure and scalable deployment practices.
  • Analyze request logs, prompt data, and system outputs to support reliability, monitoring, and auditability.
  • Build internal tools that streamline workflows and automate repetitive tasks within secure environments.
  • Partner with agency stakeholders to understand requirements, prototype solutions, and rapidly iterate based on real-world feedback.
  • Develop and deliver production-grade code and features with an emphasis on speed, simplicity, reliability, and measurable impact.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, computer engineering, physics, data science, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on software engineering experience building scalable systems, APIs, or AI/ML applications.
  • Active Top Secret or Top Secret/SCI security clearance.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience working with government agencies, the Department of War, or federal contractors on AI, software, or data projects.
  • 6+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in environments requiring high reliability or strong security controls.
  • Expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining robust, scalable, and secure AI-driven solutions that meet stringent compliance and operational requirements.
  • Experience implementing AI or machine learning products involving APIs, backend systems, and frontend interfaces.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript.
  • Strong understanding of HTTP protocols and secure API design.
  • Strong engineering background in areas such as computer science, mathematics, software engineering, physics, or data science.
  • Experience developing evaluation frameworks for AI systems and assessing capabilities in regulated or high-stakes environments.
  • Deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals, including model evaluation, training, and fine-tuning, with an emphasis on production-ready deployments.
  • Experience deploying machine learning models to production, preferably within secure or cloud-based government environments.
  • Experience writing developer documentation or maintaining SDKs for technical audiences, including government developers.
  • Ability to work with massive datasets, optimize system performance, and scale solutions for high-throughput, mission-critical workloads.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Pulumi or Terraform, particularly for secure or government-aligned deployments.
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and requirements in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to document technical solutions for diverse stakeholders.
  • Active Top Secret or Top Secret/SCI clearance with a full-scope polygraph.
