Its research teams focus on discovering and optimizing next-generation medicines by combining advanced chemistry, biology, computational science, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The organization is seeking a Principal Scientist, Medicinal Chemist to join its Peptide Therapeutics research team. This is a primarily laboratory-based technical leadership position responsible for combining hands-on synthetic expertise with strategic scientific oversight to drive the discovery and optimization of peptide therapeutics throughout the development lifecycle.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership in peptide and medicinal chemistry, execute complex synthetic programs, guide strategic compound design, and collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams to advance promising therapeutic candidates.
Key Responsibilities
Synthetic Execution & Laboratory Leadership
- Execute multi-step synthesis of peptides, peptidomimetics, and novel non-commercial building blocks or scaffolds.
- Apply expert-level skills in solid-phase peptide synthesis, including manual and automated approaches.
- Perform solution-phase organic chemistry and specialized macrocyclization or ligation strategies.
- Oversee high-resolution analytical characterization using HPLC, mass spectrometry, NMR, and related techniques.
- Confirm compound identity and ensure the delivery of high-purity materials.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership and establish high standards of scientific and laboratory excellence.
Strategic Design & Technology Innovation
- Apply conformational analysis, structure-based design, and computational modeling to optimize potency, stability, and pharmacokinetic properties.
- Utilize molecular dynamics simulations and related computational approaches to support peptide design.
- Develop and implement polycyclization strategies to improve drug-like properties.
- Establish strategic structure-activity relationship (SAR) plans and multi-parameter optimization strategies.
- Lead optimization programs from early-stage hits through IND-enabling studies.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and scientific approaches that can accelerate peptide therapeutic discovery.
Collaborative Leadership
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams and provide technical expertise across peptide therapeutics, research biology, drug discovery, and therapeutic area teams.
- Serve as a technical bridge between chemistry and other scientific disciplines.
- Supervise and mentor junior scientists directly at the laboratory bench.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, scientific innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Communicate scientific findings, technical recommendations, and strategic development plans to cross-functional stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
- 3+ years of relevant postdoctoral or industry experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in solid-phase peptide synthesis, including both manual and automated approaches.
- Strong experience in complex solution-phase organic synthesis.
- Extensive knowledge of peptide chemistry and medicinal chemistry principles.
- Experience with macrocyclic peptides and advanced peptide design strategies.
- Understanding of multiple routes of administration, including intravenous (IV), subcutaneous (SC), and oral (PO) delivery.
- Experience with library-based screening technologies such as mRNA display, AS/MS, or OBOC.
- Experience using computational chemistry and molecular modeling platforms such as Schrödinger, MOE, or Maestro.
- Knowledge of molecular dynamics, conformational sampling, and computational approaches to sequence optimization.
- Familiarity with AI/ML-driven approaches for peptide or sequence optimization.
- Strong scientific communication skills and the ability to present complex technical information and strategic roadmaps to global, cross-functional stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary scientific projects and mentor junior researchers.
