A global financial technology platform is seeking a Staff Data Scientist to join their Payments Optimization team. The organization provides unified payments and financial solutions for over 200,000 businesses worldwide, supporting payments, treasury, spend management, and embedded finance. About the Role
The Staff Data Scientist will drive the technical direction of the Payments Optimization team, focusing on designing and implementing advanced algorithms to optimize payments. This individual contributor role works closely with Product, Engineering, and Commercial leaders to identify opportunities to improve payments performance, optimize conversion, reduce costs, and manage fraud risk.

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the technical strategy for multi-objective payments optimization
  • Serve as technical lead on cross-functional initiatives, addressing complex, high-impact problems
  • Provide thought leadership on optimization algorithms (e.g., contextual bandits) and experimentation techniques (e.g., A/B testing, causal inference)
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to build scalable tools and deploy ML systems to production
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, and other teams to influence product strategy and investment decisions
  • Communicate complex data insights and technical recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mentor and coach junior data scientists and engineers

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in data science or applied machine learning
  • Proven experience in experimentation and causal inference to drive product decisions
  • Strong experience deploying ML systems to production is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to define critical systems and influence strategy in high-growth environments
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python/R
  • Experience leveraging LLMs, AI, and agents to improve processes and ML models
