Job Description

The Senior Engineering Manager will lead the engineering organization and oversee the systems, processes, and standards required to build and operate a complex AI product. The role focuses on engineering execution, reliability, organizational development, hiring, and maintaining strong technical standards.

The position combines engineering leadership with hands-on technical involvement. The successful candidate will continue reviewing code, contributing to architectural decisions, occasionally writing code, and maintaining sufficient technical context to make informed engineering decisions.

Key Responsibilities

• Own engineering execution: Establish planning cadence, prioritization, and delivery practices that enable the engineering organization to consistently ship high-quality work.
• Build the engineering operating system: Develop effective practices for on-call operations, continuous integration, code reviews, project handoffs, incident response, standups, and engineering reviews.
• Own reliability: Drive improvements to production reliability and establish the evaluation infrastructure and self-improvement loops needed to continuously improve the AI agent’s performance.
• Build an AI-native engineering organization: Introduce agentic development practices, AI-assisted code review, and internal tooling designed to increase engineering productivity while measuring whether these approaches deliver meaningful improvements.
• Own hiring and onboarding: Build a strong engineering team, maintain a rigorous hiring process, and ensure new engineers become productive while understanding their responsibilities and expectations.
• Stay technically involved: Review code, participate in architectural decisions, investigate technical issues, and maintain direct knowledge of the engineering organization and its systems.

Qualifications

• Experience leading a 10–30 person engineering organization within a startup environment.
• Demonstrated experience establishing engineering processes and operating practices that improved delivery, quality, or cycle time.
• Strong software engineering background with continued hands-on involvement in technical work.
• Experience leading engineering teams while remaining actively engaged with code, architecture, and technical decisions.
• Practical experience using AI agents and AI-assisted development workflows to improve individual and team productivity.
• Experience forming informed opinions about effective AI-enabled engineering practices and distinguishing measurable improvements from approaches that provide limited value.
• Experience maintaining high engineering standards and providing frequent, specific, and constructive feedback.
• Strong judgment and willingness to use data and technical evidence when making engineering decisions.
• Experience owning production systems where reliability and failures have a direct impact on customers.
• Strong understanding of production reliability, incident response, engineering quality, and operational practices.
• Ability to work effectively in a direct, fast-paced, and highly empowered engineering environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a downtown San Francisco office, with employees expected to work in-office four or more days per week. Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance of up to $20,000 are available.
