Summary
The Technical Director – Data Science (Discovery) will lead and contribute to data science initiatives that improve user engagement, growth, and product innovation across discovery experiences such as home, search, matchmaking, and notifications. This role combines leadership, advanced analytics, and machine learning expertise to drive strategic decisions that impact the platform’s global user community. The position reports to the Senior Director of Data Science (Consumer) and is based in San Mateo, CA (hybrid, onsite Tues-Thurs).

Responsibilities

  • Develop scalable solutions to enhance hypothesis generation for key user engagement touchpoints
  • Build and implement machine learning models that power discovery experiences in collaboration with engineering teams
  • Partner with product and engineering leaders to drive innovation in discovery via insights, causal inference, and ML prototypes
  • Apply advanced causal inference techniques to measure the effectiveness of features, events, and social initiatives
  • Conduct exploratory analyses to identify opportunities for strategic investment and advise cross-functional partners
  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments for new features, clearly communicating findings to non-technical stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree or PhD in Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math, Economics, or related quantitative field
  • 10+ years of industry experience in data science, analytics, machine learning, or economics
  • 7+ years of experience with scripting languages (Python, R) and big data tools such as SQL, Hive, Spark, and Airflow
  • Demonstrated knowledge of machine learning and deep learning frameworks
  • Experience designing and implementing large-scale recommendation systems and user-generated content platforms
  • Ability to apply creative, first-principles reasoning to solve ambiguous problems
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills
