Overview
The Applied Researcher I (AI Foundations) will contribute to foundational AI research and development, building large-scale AI models and integrating them into impactful products. The role involves collaboration across data science, machine learning engineering, and product teams to create next-generation AI-powered experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with cross-functional teams of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered solutions
  • Utilize technologies including PyTorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, and VectorDBs to analyze large-scale numeric and textual datasets
  • Design, train, evaluate, validate, and implement AI foundation models
  • Conduct applied research to translate the latest AI advancements into tangible customer experiences
  • Communicate complex technical work effectively to non-technical stakeholders
  • Define and pursue a research agenda with autonomy, focusing on impactful AI problems

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD (or in progress, to be completed before start date) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields; or M.S. in these fields plus 2 years of applied research experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • LLM or NLP focus, or 5+ years of industrial NLP research experience
  • Experience with large language model pre-training (10B+ parameters, 500B+ tokens)
  • Publications in deep learning, AI foundations, ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR
  • Expertise in optimization, model sparsification, quantization, parallelism, gradient checkpointing, or model compression
  • Proven track record of delivering large-scale models to production environments
  • Strong foundation in AI methodologies, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, RLHF, and training optimization
  • Experience developing AI libraries, platform-level, or solution-level code
