Summary
The Machine Learning Engineer will work on sensitive projects to enhance AI reliability and security, particularly within defense applications. This role requires deep technical expertise in machine learning and NLP, with a focus on large language models (LLMs), while collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate solutions into mission-critical workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with geographically distributed teams to integrate ML models into existing systems and workflows
  • Conduct data management including preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation to optimize model performance
  • Build, fine-tune, and deploy machine learning models, particularly NLP models, in cloud and local environments
  • Implement and improve DSAIL capabilities to address limitations of LLMs, including context handling and logical reasoning
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to peers, management, partners, and non-technical stakeholders
  • Switch context effectively between multiple projects and priorities
  • Stay updated on emerging ML and NLP techniques, particularly in LLM governance and guardrail development

Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in Python and the Python Data Science stack (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, deep learning and NLP libraries)
  • Experience with Langraph, LlamaIndex, and/or other agentic libraries
  • Hands-on experience with Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes, and container orchestration
  • Experience running local LLMs with frameworks such as Ollama and Transformers
  • Ability to build, train, and fine-tune models beyond using cloud APIs
  • Familiarity with LLM deployment, optimization, and general functionality
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills
  • Comfort reading academic papers and translating research into practical implementations
  • Knowledge of different NLP approaches and their applications

Nice-to-Haves

  • Familiarity with knowledge representation techniques
  • Experience supporting defense projects, including software development and data science in service labs or joint commands
